THE EATING GARAGE: CAFE EPISODES

Another food trend here in Kuching is roti teluq bakaq meleleh, which originates from Peninsular Malaysia. It’s basically grilled or toasted bread, smothered in seasonings and topped with plenty of mayo, ketchup, chilli sauce and sometimes cheese. Its name translates to melting egg toast, so u would expect to see lots of sauces all over it with a piece of egg on top. Today we adventure to a café that offers this roti teluq bakaq meleleh, along with other food in their menu.

The Eating Garage Kuching is located right in the city area and offers local Kuching food opening from day till night. The hold café is decorated with hipster stickers and paintings on the wall. Food such as laksa, kolo mee, mi goreng, stir fried dishes and not to forget the famous roti teluq bakaq meleleh are sold here.

Here is what they offered on their menu.

Today, we decided to order a few other dishes as well besides the roti teluq.

We ordered the basic roti teluq which was just the plain grilled bread with egg and a bunch of seasonings and sauces on top. It came as a piece of grilled bread with a fried egg, topped with baked beans and seasoning sauce, finished with mayo and thousand island dressing. The overall taste and flavours came from the dressings and seasonings on top, the bread and egg itself was just simple and plain, but overall it was a good combination and worked well.

We also tried the kueh tiaw goreng kerang which was the fried kueh tiaw with clams. It was spicy and sweet which was the total opposite of the usual stir fried kueh tiaw u normally find outside in hawker stalls, with the usual salty savoury taste. Its sweet flavour came from sweet soy sauce and it had a bit of rojak paste flavour to it. Apart from the spiciness it had, it was further served with cut chillies on top. This one is definitely for the spicy lovers.

One of the stir fried dishes we tried was the butter chicken. They were very generous with the gravy and nestum flakes on top. The gravy was thick, savoury and had a slight sweetness to it. It was very fragrant with a milky taste to it along with the butter. The curry leaves were fried well so its essence was released well too.

The Eating Garage Kuching is a good place to try if you’re looking for a variety of local Kuching food under one roof and also the famous roti teluq bakaq meleleh at the same time.

The Eating Garage opens daily from 8am to 1am.

ZINC RESTAURANT: FRENCH FUSION

Zinc is a restaurant that aims as producing the best, starting with their imported produce. Their menus features iberico pork, duck meat, pork steaks, most of them flown from a corner of the world.

Zinc as it turned out comes from the idea of how french bars used to have zinc on countertops to prevent rusting. It is a popular term back in the day, they were called zinc bars. As explained by the owner who also is moonlighting as a waiter by the night.

The place lovely. Everything was well thought out and well decorated. We didn't managed to get a seating inside but the outside was cool and we enjoyed where we sat.

As always, my family ordered the salad. Caesar salad. It's portions are smaller than what the price is given but otherwise, it tasted well.

Cheese Platter is the next thing we seemed to always order.

I had the duck confit. Infused with pears. Which was delicious but quite sweet itself. But also quite heavy, since it's basically just cooked in duck fat.

There was the risotto, that took quite a while to come. It wasn't as well prepared as it should be. Quite wet. It was cooked with iberico pork meat.

We had some dessert by the end of it. Passionfruit cheesecake. The portions are quite small. Though it taste good.

Though the food and atmosphere is quite good. The price and the quantity given I think is not worth it. They do also have sarawakian infused menus. Which I think would people should try out instead of the western menu. Which would be more value for money. Anyways, this is Sharon, signing off this week's post. Stay tune every week for more posts. Bye!

FISH HEAD NOODLES : JALAN SONG

This place is right opposite to Porkies and is next to a bakuteh shop and right behind One Jaya. I relinquish a photo to make things easier.

It's a typical kopitiam. There are different types of noodles to pick from as well as broth to pick from. The one my brother recommends is the one with a tomato base. It doesn't have any fish meat inside but with fish balls and fish cakes. It has that sour taste to it from the tomato base, but it's tasty even so. You can't stop drinking it.

I had kueh tiaw with mine.

There's some wantan in mine too.

Though the sauce is spicy. It still is delicious with the noodles. Not particularly sure, what's in there, but I think there's some garlic in there and definitely some chili.
Had some fresh soyabean. SO GOOD.

You're able to order some char siu chee cheong fun from next door as well as some bat kut teh. There are other dishes on the menu too but I definitely recommend the fish noodles with tomato base.

Im not very sure of their opening times since they aren't really online. But I venture a guess that they mostly open through the week. My apologies.

PINOY FESTIVE IHAW IHAW: FILIPINO FOODS

Right after Kuching Fest, we planned to go eat some filipinos food after. There was this place at padungan road, where the signs are bright and neon. PINOY FIESTA IHAW IHAW. It always distracted me when I go through that area and when we saw the other night, we made plans to really go there for dinner.  I mean we all say that sort of thing, we should eat there next time, but we get comfortable with our usual restaurant and we don't. But fun thing about running a blog, you get to have motivation to have yourself go there and eat at that restaurant.

So off we went to Pinoy. It's bright place, with pictures on the walls of reminders of Philippines with rickshaw and donkeys paintings on the tiles. It was quite empty because it was already later in the night. So our food came pretty quickly. The atmosphere was lovely, with old songs from previous generations ago coming out. The waitress explained that her grandmother collects old CDs. By the way, service in the place was good, the waitress I think is the granddaughter of whoever owns the place and was very friendly and talked to us about the food we were eating. Explaining to us things we had never heard about.

We ordered a couple of things. SISIG BABOY. It's tomato and pork skin and eggs inside with chopped onions and a lime to squeeze atop on.

I like this the most out of all the rest. It came in a hot sizzling plate, still hearing the sizzle. The pork skins and some pork meat in there were cooked well, with this sort of chewy yet crunchy texture. The lime took out the fattiness in the dish and add some tartiness which I welcomed.

And then the TORTANG TALONG, just eggplant and egg.

It was eggplant and egg, seasoned well and crispy. I got the feeling they used alot of egg in Fillipino food. I also heard they do pork alot as well. Villages would roast whole pigs for festive dinners. So you could say they were quite good.

We ordered DAING SILOG, which is fried milk fish and fried egg and rice.

It was an odd taste to experience. Not bad but actually different. It was sour the fish. I didn't know adding milk could do that.

Here's Jolynn's Candid shot. HAHAHA hi Jols.

More pics of me trying to get a close up on the food.

THE KIMBAP: KOREAN FOOD

It's pretty pricey to get things of foreign aspects in Kuching. It is therefore expensive to cater it to the masses. It is a fact that most korean restaurants in Kuching is expensive but yet people still flock to it.

There is however a new restaurant in Titanium area. Right before Sukah, with a cute heading above it's eatery. It is called Kimbap. as it's name suggests, yes, it does serve kimbap as well as other korean delicacy.

The interior is well furnished with a cafe feel too it. The restaurant doesn't serve main meals like barbecue, it serves simple dishes that is street food like kimchi pancake and spicy sticky rice cake, ddeokbokki or it's commonly known, marinated fried chicken and that is exactly what we ordered for our lunch that day.

Ddeokbokki, with a slice of cheese on that top. I never had the real thing from the streets of Korea, but nether less I had tried it several times in other situations to know what it is suppose to taste like. It is sweet and spicy, with the glutinous rice cake chewy and warm to my tastebuds. The amount was enough for all of us, even though it is a side dish.

We also had the pancake with kimchi, crispy not to oily and savoury. I like dipping mine with the soy sauce which is I think mixed with vinegar.

There was the japchae next, delicious as well. I've made japchae enough times to know that every kind is different, depending on the chef's taste. This one isn't sweet as I'm used to but it is still good. The noodles al dente, the vegetables that go along with it, seasoned well.

There was the kimbap, which was the best I think out of all the food we had. The rice was well done, not to mushy and just right, with the ingredients inside like pickled radish carrots and beef well seasoned and taste well together. The thing about this sort of simple dishes is that if you jut seasoned it well enough, it beats any hard recipes out there.

They gave us our meals fairly fast and it was good service though the side dishes like kimchi and beans weren't very big portions. Also you can't have a refill unless you want to pay the extra price. But this restaurant is by far the cheapest in all the korean restaurants in Kuching and well worth the price too.
