Gula apong seems to be the trend recently in Kuching. You know it when you can see cafes and restaurants having gula apong put into almost every dessert. Dessert such as gula apong sponge and cream cakes, gula apong kek lapis, gula apong ice cream, shaved ice gula apong and many more, can be found at almost anywhere in Kuching. Today, we adventure to a famous little spot selling gula apong ice cream located at the open air market, in which you can find a queue for this sweet and delicious cup of dessert almost every night.
Upon reaching RG Ais Krim, there were a few people waiting in line for their ice cream but they were prepared at quite a fast pace which was good, to ease the flow of the queue. Besides the famous gula apong ice cream, they sell cookies and light snacks.
You can choose from 3 toppings for your ice cream. There are peanuts, cornflakes and famous amos cookies.
Here are the sizes.
There are also different flavours of ice cream available on different days.
We decided to go with just the basic plain gula apong ice cream, to taste its originality.
This is the famous gula apong ice cream. Soft served vanilla ice cream was placed onto a plastic cup with gula apong syrup poured onto it.
The ice cream was soft and easy to scoop. However, it had quite a rough texture to it, the type that shaven ice gives you. I would prefer a smoother and creamier and ice cream. This was quite an opposite to the smooth and creamy texture you would normally get from a soft serve.
The gula apong syrup made each scoop of the whole thing really sweet, till it can be quite overpowering. It was glossy and sticky just like honey. You would feel like you're eating really sweet syrup with ice cream, double the sweetness.
Overall, everything was just too sweet for my liking. I am uncertain for why this extremely sweet dessert is actually a hype for many almost everyday. But I guess this would be a favourite for those who have a really sweet tooth.
Come try it for yourself.
