THE ROOSTER: CHICKEN RICE

Nowadays, especially in Kuching, you can see many of your favourite local foods from your favourite street shops selling them, those you’ve been patronizing since young, now taken up to a whole new level, slowly transforming into various food chains. We’ve seen one going really well so far which was Mom’s Laksa. Read more about Mom’s Laksa here.

We’ve also seen the famous Singapore Chicken Rice opening for quite a long time till today, also many other chicken rice food chains such as the Chicken Rice Shop. Today, we will be adventuring to one new chicken rice food chain in the making which is The Rooster.

The Rooster opened quite recently, a few months back last year, where they had a promotion set that came with free drinks. This shop specialises in other foods as well such as wan tan hor, fried noodles, lamb stews, sandwiches and stir-fried veges besides the chicken rice alone.

The steamed chicken rice came in a neatly arranged garnishing, served with a bowl of hot soup. The chillies and ginger paste were self-service, and you can take as much as you like. The chilli, which is the most important condiment to chicken rice, was done perfectly, with a  really good kick of spiciness to it. The garlic and ginger in it was also balanced perfectly. The chicken was tender and the sauce that went on top of it was really fragrant, almost having a sesame oil like taste overall. The rice was soft and fluffy, and it was full of flavour.

The other popular dishes were wan tan hor and herbal claypot chicken. The wan tan hor was slightly too runny and quite bland. However, its portion was really huge. Just a pity it didn’t taste quite right. The claypot herbal chicken was not too bad, but it had more of a stewed mushroom and dark soy sauce taste to it rather than a herbal one.

I would The Rooster did its main item which is chicken rice really well, but as for the other dishes, it wasn’t quite there yet in terms of its taste. We recommend you give their chicken rice a try.

The Rooster opens daily from 10.30am to 9pm
The Rooster271,
Jalan Datuk Wee Kheng Chiang,
93450 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

FROM GREECE WITH FOOD

Greece Santorini, one of the most idyllic picturesque place I've ever seen.

Taverns in Greece. Popular restaurants locations with grilled meats.

On top of the hill, one of the Acropolis temples.

Vine leaves stuffed rice and meat, Dolmades as it is called. A common appetizer in most greek restaurants.

Fried Feta chesse with sesame and honey. Another appetiser that is common in restaurants. Saganaki is the term for it.

Spanakopita, spinach with feta cheese and mixed together, triangle pastries. Cheese fried sticks that is also is actually quite oily but still delicious.

Fricasse is cabbage stew with pork with egg lemon sauce. The meat breaks apart when you eat it. Very soft and delicious.

Mousakka, is like cottage pie, potatoes stuffing on the top and tomato and ground beef at the bottom.

Orange pound cake, with some syrup. It is soft and warm when eaten.

Greek yougurt and sweet tomato syrup on it. Greek yogurt is actually not as sour as it is advertised. It's actually quite sweet and not even as creamy as it seems.

Soulvaki, a street food, almost like a kebab. Yogurt garlic sauce with chips and tomatoes and skewered lamb with toasted bread.

COCOPURI : COCONUT DESSERTS

We've introduced to you coconut shakes, those thirst quenching creamy delicacies on a hot weather. Now we bring you another delicacy which is also cooling, refreshing and perfect for hot weathers. It's Cocopuri's homemade coconut ice cream.

This shop is known for their homemade ice cream in which most of its flavours are made from coconut milk as its base. They offer unique flavours such as sweet potato, yam, and even Sarawak's local drink, Teh C Peng Special.

Besides ice cream, they do offer other items on their menu such as green bean and red bean desserts, all topped with a nice scoop of ice cream.

Upon ordering your ice cream, you can get to choose if you would like any waffle cup to go with it as well as toppings. Their toppings include some interesting ones such as toasted coconut flakes, crispy sweet potato waffle and roasted almonds.

Here we have 3 scoops on a waffle cone.
We had the original coconut based ice cream, teh c peng special and sweet potato.

The teh c peng special was quite similar to its original form in terms of its taste. The gula apong flavour stood out the most.

The sweet potato had a comforting taste to it, and was a bit starchy in texture. This was the yellow coloured sweet potato used, so it didn't have a strong sweet potato taste to it.

The original based ice cream, which as made form coconut milk, was lacking in flavour. We thought the texture was smooth and rich, however we couldn't really tell that there was coconut milk used.

The toppings were great and each had their own unique taste and texture. The toasted coconut flakes had a nice slightly burnt taste to it which went even better when paired with the original based ice cream. Another interesting topping as mentioned was the sweet potato waffle. It was slightly crispy on the outside and had a chewy consistency throughout the centre. It tasted very much like sweet potato chips.

The waffle cone was crispy, sweet and just right for almost any flavours of their ice cream here. Definitely recommended to pair with your scoop of ice cream.

We also got to try the Cocopuri coconut shake. This was something we looked forward to try out of everything from the menu as they claimed it to be one of their specialties. Their coconut shake has a twist to the regular ones you can find elsewhere, which was the addition of the lime zest and blend of toasted coconut flakes inside the shake.

When it arrived, it had a really creamy and fine ice blended texture. Presentation was really great too with syrup flowing at the sides of the cup and sprinkles of green from the lime zest on top.
However, as I took the first sip, it had an acquired taste, which I couldn't describe but I did not really like it. It was slightly sour from the lime zest, had sort of a funny burnt taste to it as well, but when these 2 were paired with the coconut's original flavours, made the whole thing quite unpleasant. It was a totally different coconut shake to us. For some, it may be a delicious addition of lime zest, but we didn't think it went well as an addition.

If you ever plan to drop by Cocopuri, we would definitely recommend their wide variety of homemade ice cream, but not the coconut shake. We have yet to try their other desserts such as the green bean and red bean soup. It's your turn to give Cocopuri a try.

Cocopuri opens daily from 12pm to 10pm except Mondays.

Ground Floor Lot 14139 (S.L.6)

BONBON CHOCOLATE AND MOOSE COFFEE: MANCHESTER CAFES

It's winter. It's rain. It's the weather. But who cares when you got coffee and hot chocolate. The weekend though grey was spent with some good company and lots of walking.

There's the Moose Cafe. An american and canadian coffeeshop. Popular because of their brunches, we were meant to spent our morning outside. We were saved by our own thick clothes with the chill of the outside and warmed later by the food in our bellies.

I think the cup is extremely cute. Look at the moose. Coffee was excellent by the way.

Potato cakes with bell peppers and halloumi. It was really good, apparently it's a big thing in America. Served with some poached eggs and tomato sauce on the top. It's a big meal. I couldn't finish it.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 9am to 4pm

Moose Coffee Cafe
20 York St,

Manchester M2 2BB,
UK

Bonbon Chocolate Boutique. It's in a corner of the end of the street. Only serving anything chocolate. They have an array of goodies on shelves and behind counters.
The ambience is really nice. Low lights and close quarters. The place is quaint and filled with antique furniture.
Hot chocolate. I had some orange zest on mine. Brings it to a whole new level.

Opening hours: Thursday to Saturday 11am to 6pm, Sunday 12pm to 5pm, closed every Monday to Wednesday.

Bonbon Chocolate Boutique
9 John St,
Manchester M4 1EQ,
UK

This is Sharon signing off this week's post. Stay tune every week for more posts.
