COCOPURI : COCONUT DESSERTS

We've introduced to you coconut shakes, those thirst quenching creamy delicacies on a hot weather. Now we bring you another delicacy which is also cooling, refreshing and perfect for hot weathers. It's Cocopuri's homemade coconut ice cream.

This shop is known for their homemade ice cream in which most of its flavours are made from coconut milk as its base. They offer unique flavours such as sweet potato, yam, and even Sarawak's local drink, Teh C Peng Special.

Besides ice cream, they do offer other items on their menu such as green bean and red bean desserts, all topped with a nice scoop of ice cream.

Upon ordering your ice cream, you can get to choose if you would like any waffle cup to go with it as well as toppings. Their toppings include some interesting ones such as toasted coconut flakes, crispy sweet potato waffle and roasted almonds.

We had the original coconut based ice cream, teh c peng special and sweet potato.

The teh c peng special was quite similar to its original form in terms of its taste. The gula apong flavour stood out the most.

The sweet potato had a comforting taste to it, and was a bit starchy in texture. This was the yellow coloured sweet potato used, so it didn't have a strong sweet potato taste to it.

The original based ice cream, which as made form coconut milk, was lacking in flavour. We thought the texture was smooth and rich, however we couldn't really tell that there was coconut milk used.

The toppings were great and each had their own unique taste and texture. The toasted coconut flakes had a nice slightly burnt taste to it which went even better when paired with the original based ice cream. Another interesting topping as mentioned was the sweet potato waffle. It was slightly crispy on the outside and had a chewy consistency throughout the centre. It tasted very much like sweet potato chips.

The waffle cone was crispy, sweet and just right for almost any flavours of their ice cream here. Definitely recommended to pair with your scoop of ice cream.

We also got to try the Cocopuri coconut shake. This was something we looked forward to try out of everything from the menu as they claimed it to be one of their specialties. Their coconut shake has a twist to the regular ones you can find elsewhere, which was the addition of the lime zest and blend of toasted coconut flakes inside the shake.

When it arrived, it had a really creamy and fine ice blended texture. Presentation was really great too with syrup flowing at the sides of the cup and sprinkles of green from the lime zest on top.
However, as I took the first sip, it had an acquired taste, which I couldn't describe but I did not really like it. It was slightly sour from the lime zest, had sort of a funny burnt taste to it as well, but when these 2 were paired with the coconut's original flavours, made the whole thing quite unpleasant. It was a totally different coconut shake to us. For some, it may be a delicious addition of lime zest, but we didn't think it went well as an addition.

If you ever plan to drop by Cocopuri, we would definitely recommend their wide variety of homemade ice cream, but not the coconut shake. We have yet to try their other desserts such as the green bean and red bean soup. It's your turn to give Cocopuri a try.

SERAPI VIRGIN COCONUT SHAKE: DRINKS AND SHAKES

Just as we were talking about trends in some of our previous episodes be it desserts or food, here comes another hot item made out of just a few simple ingredients. This time, it’s a drink, the famous coconut shake, so popular that many would queue up even till 45 mins to an hour just for a cup of it.

This drink originated from Klebang, a store next to the Caltex Petrol Station located at Jalan Klebang Besar, Melaka. It got them such a great response that many other stores decided to sell the same thing and was brought over to many other states and cities around Malaysia, eventually Kuching.

Today, The Makan Post decided to try one of the famous coconut shake stalls in Kuching which is Serapi Virgin Coconut Shake. It’s perfect for those who are planning to drive a bit out of town, planning to go for a hike, nature activities and so on as this place is located pretty far away from the city around Jalan Matang.

The whole shop was decorated with old coconuts and had a very nice nature-like ambience with bamboos, tree stumps and rattans. Rattan baskets with coconuts in them were placed on each table and a marker was also provided for customers to leave their writings and doodles as memories.

Apart from the famous coconut shake, this shop also sells mango shake and ice cream with syrup soda. They are pretty known for their mango shake as well. Besides the fancy drinks, cookies, cakes, snacks and pickled fruit are also sold at the counter.

We ordered the special coconut shake and mango shake, which was just an additional ice cream in it apart from the normal shake without.

The coconut shake was rich and had a really thick consistency. It tasted more of coconut milk but it was still refreshing. It also had bits of ice inside so it gave a really nice texture overall and wasn’t too sweet either.

The mango shake on the other hand tasted quite artificial, like it wasn’t made with fresh mango fruit. The taste of artificial mango syrup was overpowering and made the whole drink too sweet. The coconut shake is definitely a better option to choose than this.

Overall, we thought that the shakes offered here was just alright, as we have tasted better ones before. However, it would be a nice treat to enjoy with the relaxing ambience on your way back from all the hiking and exercising on a hot weather.
