CITY CAFE : KOLO MEE EPISODES

Good food is often found at popular spots, spots in which many would come to know of and can be seen just as you pass by the streets. Spots in which food can be commonly found as well. However, good food can also be found at the most unexpected areas, areas one would not go to for a satisfying meal. Sometimes, food served at these hidden gems can also taste better than well known spots in the city. Today, an adventure to one of the hidden places selling Sarawak's favourite, the kolo mee. In fact, it's located in a very old shopping mall, now mostly known for computer related gadgets, electronics and handphones. It's City Cafe located at the basement of this shopping mall, Wisma Saberkas.

This basement floor at Wisma Saberkas is surrounded with a few cafes just next to each other, with tables and chairs scattered along the walkway. During lunch hours, the whole place would be packed with the majority of the crowd from offices nearby. A popular cafe here is City Cafe, selling a tasty bowl of kolo mee.

City Cafe's kolo mee stall sells other dishes as well besides the usual kolo mee. Here's the menu.

A plated filled with freshly fried yong tau foo can also be seen placed next to the cooking station. Some prefer to have their kolo mee along with some of these freshly made yong tau foo.

Their kolo mee comes with a small bowl of clear soup as well. It is a tradition to drink the soup at the end of every kolo mee meal, as a palate cleanser and a comforting way to end the meal.

This special bowl of kolo mee comes with fishballs, processed crab meat sticks, meatballs, pork belly, prawns and vegetables. The noodle was springy and the texture was just right. It was seasoned well, and was drenched in a generous amount of gravy, so each bite of noodles wouldn't feel dry and would be coated well in sauce.

In most kolo mee shops, the clear soups served are often known to be bland and filled with hints of raw flour taste to it from the process of cooking the noodles. However, the clear soup served here was really flavourful, tasty and indeed comforting.

It had a peppery taste to it, had the right amount of saltiness and served as a great palate cleanser at the end of the meal.

Now it's your turn to give this hidden gem a try.

City cafe opens daily except Tuesdays from 8pm to 6pm

SUKHA: CAFE EPISODES

Sukha I think is one of the many popular cafes to visit in Kuching. They have what all good cafes have, great ambience, good food and service. I’ve been there a few times and I enjoyed my visit each time.

This café is of moderate size, with high ceilings and decorated with interesting antiques, like an old radio, and bikes above the customers. And of course the paper cranes they use as their café logo, delicately placed with strings and dangling mid-air, placed in a corner.

Sukha serves different variants of food, Asian, western and Asian fusion. Their creations are quite innovative, like the beef rendang pasta. I never heard of that one before. And there is also the typical traditional Asian meals, like spicy thai chicken rice. Though these are all delicious, however they are most famous for this western dish, fried chicken with buttermilk waffles. Hot damn, I never had such good fried chicken in my life.

This is usually the meal people order when they come to Sukha. It’s a specialty dish that is more commonly eaten as breakfast in America. It is what it is, deliciously marinated and well-seasoned crispy fried chicken and fluffy and light buttermilk waffles. I think making waffles with buttermilk, has it built with more flavor and packs a nice taste in one’s mouth. They serve it with garlic sauce, which I think combines a taste of sweet and salty from the chicken.

It’s a big helping, and with the sweetness of the waffles, has one very full quickly, even though I wanted MORE.

My friends tried waffles with ice-cream and cinnamon apples, what can go wrong with vanilla ice-cream and waffles, absolutely nothing. The cinnamon apples were alright, I mean cinnamon and apples usually goes pretty well together, it’s a classic pairing. Tangy and sweet, the spice heightening those flavours.

Spicy Thai chicken, I, for the life in me, cannot handle spicy food. I had a bite of it, and I just can’t eat anymore. From what I heard though, it was quite good. I’m sorry I cannot elaborate. It was in my mouth for a few seconds before I quickly down my tea with it. The thai chicken was served with rice, and a fried egg on top of it.

Sukha’s chef really has good presentation. They plate the meals wonderfully, the cinnamon apples made into tiny roses on top of the waffles, they takes skill, my friends.

My friends and I shared a plate of churros. I had my share of churros, and my experience has been mixed. The worst one was in London, in a Christmas market. The churros dry, chocolate sauce was alright, it was just the churros I had a hard time swallowing. You would think in London, at a Christmas market, they would serve good food.

So back to churros, it was seasoned well, cinnamon and sugar, crispy, softly snaps as you break it. It was crunchy and wasn’t too oily when you consume it. The chocolate sauce I think had hints of banana to it. Overall, delicious, something you snack on, with no regrets.

I ordered a red tea latte, which I have to say was hugely overpriced. The meals there are mostly above ten ringgit, maximum of eighteen ringgit. It’s quite pricey but I think some of the meals would be worth it. But if it’s the tea, it's not worth it. Though the froth was prettily designed.

Here’s the link below of their facebook page for more information:

Coffee Obsession: Cafe Episodes

It's like a thing in Kuching, that when a new place opens, it's immediately crowded with people. You guys know what I'm talking about right? But I don't have a problem with the crowd, it's just, you get mislead. Picture this, you’re passing by, seeing all these people, and you get the wrong impression, thinking the place has good food, but then it doesn't, and you have the frustration of wondering why the heck is there so many people here. But of course, as a foodie, you risk this chance every time, and you go anyway.

Thank Gawd coffee obsession isn't one of those places.

It's a relatively new café, on Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, Hock Kui Commercial Centre. It's a sort of hard to find, but I suppose that's the point. Hidden, as if to create a certain atmosphere, excitement. But I think I’m reading too much into it. Anyway, moving on, ahem. The cafe is like a loft, a nice comfortable setting, warm lighting, the scent of food in the air, and chatter and noise as you go in. By the time we went there, it was like a kopitiam, the noise I mean, there was just hordes of people around.

It was designed to look homey, inviting, like most cafes are, so they get you to stay. Long wooden tables, cushioned seats, intimate lighting in some corners, this place even has a bookshelf for those people going solo, or those waiting for their friends.

The staff were friendly people, as I found out, lovely in fact. Jolynn had came here before, and recommended we go there for our discussion for the food blog. In fact, that picture on the website is from Coffee Obsession, we ordered a caffe latte just to have that look for our blog. We also bought some dessert, bread pudding, ice cream oreo cheesecake, and some more drinks, creme brulee latte, and at the staff’s recommendation, haiwaiian latte.

We sat ourselves on some high wooden tables and chairs, embarrassed the heck out of ourselves by standing on the chairs to take pictures for our blog. Oh my gawd, I’m still cringing at the memory, but for the sake of art, one must sacrifice dignity.

As you can see, it's a nice shot. There's the caffe latte, bread pudding and ice cream oreo cheesecake.

The ice cream oreo cheesecake is definitely something you have to order. It was heaven in a bowl, they had put the cheesecake in a jar, layered it properly and when you scooped out a wad of it to eat, it was this smooth texture, light and fluffy to the taste and not to mention the broken oreo pieces of goodness that was hidden inside the dessert.

The caffe latte has this smooth, creamy texture, and a strong medium kick in the latte. It has this fine textured milk as well, overall I think it was a good cup of coffee. The espresso has a good aroma, enticing my tastebuds.

The butter bread pudding was just spot on.  The pudding has this crispy layer on top, juicy and soft on the bottom and the insides. It was served with light cream on top which pairs well together. There were raisins inside and I just love the strong butter taste in it. It complements well with the caffe latte, the bitterness of the coffee cutting the sweetness. Jolynn never had bread pudding before, and in her opinion, it'll ruin her for other bread puddings to come.

I had the creme brulee latte, delicious stuff. Since creme brulee is mostly custard, and a caramelised surface, the taste in this latte is not so different. Creamy sweetness you expect in a custard and just the right amount of blend between coffee and caramel.

This was a recommendation. Hawaiian  Latte. It consisted of the usual ice latte but with added coconut milk and blue lagoon, hence the blue liquid at bottom. At the first sip, it brought out an interesting flavor.  The sweetness of the blue lagoon, and when combined with the espresso and milk, it's just right, with a hint of saltiness and richness from coconut milk. An odd combination, but works.

This seafood paella was really good. It can hold it's own to the other paellas served in western restaurants in this town. And with a price of about less than 15 ringgit, definitely worth it. The chef used short grain rice. It was packed full of flavor with generous amount of seafood. Smoky taste and smells absolutely amazing when it got served. However, it does not have a slight crispy/hard bottom, like how paellas are supposed to be, probably because it got scooped out and reheated. Apart from that, kudos to the chef. The best one I ever tasted around Kuching. Definite recommendation.

I absolutely love this dish. It's a mushroom, cheese, poached egg bruschetta of sorts. I can't recall the name, but I did remember how good it tasted. The yolk broke as I cut into it, spilling the yellow goodness over the stir fried mushrooms, and melted cheese on the thick layer of bread beneath. Eating it all together with the lettuce and tomato, oh gawd, food orgasm. They used a number of different mushrooms, shiitake being one of them. It wasn't oily, it was a refreshing meal, good for a late night snack.

It is definitely a place to visit and to hang with friends, it opens to like to eleven thirty, but you have to prepare yourself for the noise in the place. If you’re looking for some quiet time, don’t go at night, it’s when everyone is there.
